GFGFGFG

  • Know your visitors

    • Know how they connect to the internet. If your visitors are using dial-up connections your site may take longer to load if there are too many graphics.
    • Make sure that you are publishing content that will keep your visitors interested and coming back.
  • Stay focused

    • Your site has a theme or a purpose, so make sure you stick to it. Don't add graphics or text just to fill space.
  • Use pictures wisely

    • Using pictures can help you communicate effectively without having to use tons of words. Make sure you are using pictures that convey your message.
    • Make sure that you are using the right size pictures. Large pictures can take a long time to load which becomes a road-block for visitors. You may want to use thumbnails on the main page then link to a page with larger images.

  • Make important things easy to find

    • You don't want to make visitors search for what is important on your site. You have a few seconds to catch their attention, make sure that they see what you want them to see right away.
    • Make navigation as easy as possible. If your site is composed of several different pages, make sure visitors can navigate them easily. Logical page navigation is a must, don't confuse your visitors with tricky or complex paths. You may want to draw your site and include links to make sure a page is not hanging off in space.
  • Test as much as possible

    • The appearance of your site can be dictated by many different factors; the browser that a visitor is using can handle html tags differently from others. Specialized fonts may not be on the visitors system, which can change the way your page renders. You will want to render your page with as many browsers as you can.
    • If you are making major changes to your site make sure you walk thru every link and check your changes before you publish it to the world.

Remember that these are general rules. Everyone's site and objectives are different. Find what works for you and stick with that.
